VAK has custom-built a new truck and trailer combination for Rovaniemi-based NK-Logistiikka. Its structural design has been optimised to reduce fuel consumption. Equipped with a new type of aerodynamic package, the combination is now on the road, providing valuable information about the solution’s performance in real-world driving conditions.

The new truck and trailer combination for NK-Logistiikka, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, was unveiled at Power Truck Show in August. Tailored for food transport, the combination has capacity for 52 FIN pallets and a gross combination weight of 68 tonnes. It attracted attention even before delivery. Its standout feature is an aerodynamic package designed and fitted at VAK to reduce air resistance and, in turn, fuel consumption.

The new aerodynamic package includes air deflectors, solid side guards and underbody panels fitted beneath the trailer chassis. Together, these components help the air flow as smoothly as possible and reduce turbulence around the chassis.

Real-world experience on a winter transport route

The new combination carries out deliveries for Kesko from the Helsinki metropolitan area to the northernmost parts of Lapland. Another combination without an equivalent aerodynamic package also operates on the same route. This provides an opportunity to compare the solution’s effects on fuel consumption under real-world conditions.

As well as potential fuel savings, the aerodynamic package may offer another significant benefit. The trailer’s fully enclosed chassis is likely to reduce the build-up of snow and ice beneath the vehicle. In winter, large amounts of snow and ice often accumulate around the chassis of a conventional trailer, which can add several thousand kilograms to the combination’s gross weight in the worst cases.

NK-Logistiikka and VAK have a long history of collaboration

Ari Kittilä, Managing Director of NK-Logistiikka, is pleased with the company’s long-standing collaboration with VAK.

– We have previously carried out various equipment trials in cooperation with VAK. They have a very positive approach to development work and different types of customisations.

– Our first impressions of the new aerodynamic solution are positive. The combination appears to be highly fuel-efficient. We are looking forward to seeing how it performs in different winter conditions.

Kesko is committed to reducing logistics emissions as part of its strategy

Jarmo Nikupeteri, Regional Director responsible for Kesko’s network of logistics transport operators, welcomes solutions that improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions in heavy-duty transport. Nikupeteri and VAK founder Lassi Virtanen have worked together for several decades.

– VAK is a pioneering company in its field, with both the willingness and the capability to find innovative solutions for developing transport equipment. Improving aerodynamics is a practical measure that also benefits electrically powered vehicles.
